Venous Blood Gas (VBG) is a test to measure the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and acid-base balance in the blood.
This test is typically done using a sample of blood from a vein, in contrast to an arterial blood gas (ABG) test that is done using an artery.
Parameters measured in a VBG include
- pH,
- partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2),
- partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2),
- bicarbonate (HCO3-),
- oxygen saturation (SaO2),
- and base excess (BE).
These parameters can provide information about the acid-base balance, the efficiency of gas exchange in the lungs, and the body's compensatory mechanisms.
